Heritage town + stone-path hike

Barichara & the Camino Real to Guane

Barichara is one of Colombia's 17 official heritage towns: stone streets, whitewashed walls and views over the Suárez valley. From the top of town an old royal road drops to tiny Guane. Go early, walk down, and come back with a full camera roll.

Barichara & the Camino Real to Guane

Barichara sits 21 km from San Gil on a paved road, and its historic centre is a National Monument. Spend an hour wandering: steep cobbled streets, carved stone, churches at every turn. Wikivoyage noted buses from the Terminalito every 20–30 minutes in 2023, about 45 minutes each way — check current times before you go.

The Camino Real starts at a marker stone in Barichara and runs about 5.5 km to Guane. Destino Chicamocha puts it at two to two and a half hours at a good pace. The path was built by the Guane people, restored in the 1800s by the German Geo von Lengerke, and declared a National Monument in 1977. Expect cactus, big views and a lot of downhill.

Guane is tiny and quiet: a handful of streets, a church and an archaeological and paleontological museum worth a look. Carry plenty of water and avoid walking in the midday heat — Wikivoyage is blunt about that. Ask us how to get back from Guane before you set off, so you're not stuck waiting on a hot plaza wondering where the next ride is.
